I just came across this while browsing the NY Times online... as Rutgers is my alma mater, and since I graduated with a BA in Philosophy less than four years ago, I just had to post this...

Go Rutgers, And props to the Philosophy Department. I'm thrilled that more and more students are realizing the benefits of taking a few minutes (hours? years?) out to examine life from a deeper perspective... majoring in philosophy was probably one of the best decisions I made in college.

I think there has been a shift in student goals in college, and that in part has contributed to the rise of philosophy. I know I regret not taking classes in it (and am sorely tempted to take them after-the-fact), as a science major at Cook it seemed like a wasted class at the time.
But these days, as the IT people I know talk about career shifts into everything from management to cupcake baking... as we start to wrestle with worldwide concerns that we influence through position and dollars more than posters and tshirts... as we start to examine the enrichment of a life now partially lived... well, these days philosophy, religion, and worldliness become all the more pertinent. If only someone had explored these topics before us, and "wait! They did, I just didn't read it yet."
